Abstract

The higher-order states in virtue of which intentional states are conscious have no essential tie to rational thinking, intentional action, executive function, or the correcting of multistep chains of reasoning. But we can - independently of any such functionality and of evolutionary selection pressures - explain why those higher-order states do very often occur.
